Abstract

The objective of this article is to discuss the concept of the nation in the work of José CarlosMariátegui. It attempts to interpret in his work the place of the Indian in the construction ofthe nation, analyzing racism as a mechanism of domination and a constant attempt, by thecolonizers as well as the imperialists, to subordinate indigenous groups through the occultationof history. Mariátegui, after admitting to being a socialist, appropriated Marxist tools inorder to present his conception of the nation. He also analyses imperialism in Peru, examininghow political forces contrary to imperialist domination opposed the process of domination andhow their subordination impacted the development of the nation.
