Abstract

This paper analyzes the meaning of the terms region and regional as spatial (physical or symbolic) categories present in economics, geography and culture. Then it discusses the topic of spatial (regional) inequalities through the historical context of social formations and the action of social classes, with an emphasis on Antonio Gramsci’s treatment of the southern question in Italy.
