Abstract

This article presents a panorama of two of the most significant social movements in Latin America and the world in recent decades: the Mexican Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN) and the Brazilian Movement of Landless Rural Workers (MST). It attempts to identify the potential and limits concretely experienced as a result of diverse contexts and social bases, that can influence the options for different tactics and strategies and to throw some clues to the interpretation of the relations between State, governments and social movements of the current historical moment of world capitalism – promotor and developer of institutional designs and political subjectivities.
