Abstract

This article attempts to explain the profound and recurrent political crises in independent Ukraine. It begins by presenting the principle economic, political and social characteristics of that former Sovient republic, as well as some of their crisis. After discarding the predominant explanations for them, it proposes the hypothesis that they derive from the sui generis character of the Ukrainian bourgeoisie (‘oligarchs’) and of their political regime.
