Abstract

A profound discontent rooted in the degradation of the living conditions of the popular classes and the aggravation of all types of social inequality as a result of the structural crisis of capitalism and neoliberal policies has, since October of 2018, led thousands of demonstrators dressed in yellow vests to the streets of Paris and, shortly after that, throughout France. Despite the reticence of the great majority of the union and political left, which suspected the movement of being close to the right, and unlike other movements, the protestors stayed in the streets, confronting the neoliberal Macron government. The social bases of the movement, its actions, its interlocutors and its future are some of the key issues discussed in this article.
