This study investigates Sigmund Freud’s contribution to the Handwörterbuch der gesamten Medizin, organized by Albert Villaret, with a focus on the writing of the entry “Hysterie.” It examines how Freud, in addressing hysteria, progressively distances himself from strictly anatomical models and introduces a psychodynamic perspective, characterized by the mobility of symptoms and the influence of psychic processes in the genesis of neurosis. The analysis of the entry reveals the anticipation of fundamental psychoanalytic concepts, particularly regarding hypnotic suggestion, functional dissociation, and the displacement of nervous excitation. Furthermore, the relationship between Freud’s formulations and Jean-Martin Charcot’s doctrine is explored, highlighting both convergences and divergences in the understanding of neuroses. The findings indicate that, in this context, Freud oscillates between a neurophysiological explanation and a psychogenic conception of hysteria. It is concluded that his contribution to Villaret’s dictionary not only synthesizes his experience with Charcot but also represents a turning point in the development of his thought, marking the early stages of psychoanalysis.
