The study analyzed the concept of governance and public governance relating to Brazilian scientific production from 1988 to 2019. For this, we used research by the term governance in two digital databases: Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO) and Brazilian Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations (BDTD). The research approach was qualitative, based on a bibliographical and documentary survey. A total of 179 papers selected theses, dissertations, and articles with the criterion of social participation related to public governance. The results show that research on the phenomenon is recent and that there is a diversification of governance and public governance concepts, illustrated by the diversity of areas that problematize the phenomenon.
