Abstract

The purpose of this article is to recognize how the interpretations of territorialities have been used as tools for the establishment of identities in Brazil. To this end, it identifies Ekout paintings and maps of different origins portraying the Portuguese portion of America during the 17th century, and analyzes how these representations of the territory and its inhabitants became an important factor in systematizing the process of the European possession of the world. The results found show that the topological foundations guided discourses and practices, revealing the core objectives behind territorial appropriations and the establishment of borders, which in turn redimensioned the understanding of what Brazil would be.
