Divorce, lawyers and judges (Belém-PA, 1890)

Abstract

Through contentious divorce proceedings filed in 1890, this article set out to understand forms of language manufactured by some lawyers and judges in the face of adultery in the city of Belém-PA. In other words, the study paid attention to the language structures manufactured by some judges who, in their sentences, printed understandings derived from jurisprudence, but also repeatedly used everyday life to support decisions; The reflections also analyzed narratives from certain lawyers (defenders and accusers) of husbands and wives involved in alleged marital infidelities. In view of this, on the one hand, law enforcement officers emerged in the Family Civil Courts not only as interpreters of legislation, but also as “readers” of everyday plots; on the other hand, the judges did not remain outside the influence of legal thinking, as they added their particular knowledge to it.
