Annotated translation of 'The Man-Machine' by Jean Paul

The paper presents a Portuguese translation of Jean Paul’s sa- tirical narrative “The Man-Machine” of 1789 and discusses it in the con- text of the literary, cultural, and philosophical discourse on the nature of human beings in relation to machines from the 18th century, the “age of machines”, until contemporary theories of human beings as hybrids be- tween biological organisms and mechanical artifacts called cyborgs.
