Effects of statins on bone tissue
Keywords:
bone and bones, hydroxymethylglutaryl-CoA reductase inhibitors, osteogenesisAbstract
Bone tissue has the capacity of repairing itself without leaving a scar after an injury or surgical resections. For large defects, on the other hand, the structural loss requires the use of bone grafts, to which growth and cellular differentiation factors can be added. Recent studies have shown that statins, a class of drugs used to lower cholesterol levels, have pleiotropic effects, which include increase of bone formation by osteoblasts and inhibition of bone resorption by osteoclasts. The current study is an update on the actions of these drugs and its mechanism on bone tissue. However, due to the existence of scientific papers that deny these effects, more research should be conducted as to clarify the matter.
