Abstract

The emphysematous cholecystitis is an acute infection of the gallbladder wall, characterized by gangrene, perforation of the gallbladder and high mortality. This paper reports the case of a male patient with intense sudden right upper quadrant pain with fever. An abdominal ultrasonography revealed an empty gallbladder with normal wall and contents, and no gallstones. After clinical status deterioration, a computerized tomography scanning of the abdomen showed thick liquid and gas within the lumen of the gallbladder, consistent with the diagnosis of acute emphysematous cholecystitis.
