Abstract

ABSTRACT Purpose: observation of the stages of obese pregnant women who are in labor (dilation, expulsion, dequitation and Greenberg), and their maternal, fetal and perinatal repercussions. Methods: prospective study of childbirth in obese patients, comparing them to a non obese group, identified through the body mass group (BMI) observed at Conjunto Hospitalar (CHS) and Hospital Santa Lucinda (HSL) in Sorocaba, from March 2008 to January 2009. The variables investigated were the stages of childbirth (dilatation, expelling, dequitation and Geenberg) stages of labor, maternal intercurrences, characteristics and evolution of their neonates in the nursery. The statistical analysis included tests of differences between proportions and correlations. Results: forty obese patients were studied. They had a higher proportion to: age between 20 - 29 (62,50%), married (45,00%), white colour (57,50%), unfinished high school (42,50%), who came from Sorocaba (87,50%). The average of prenatal care originally from Sorocaba was nine appointment (90,00%), greater proportion of multiparous women (60,00%) and vaginal delivery (77,50%). The stages of labor evolution (dilatation, expelling, dequitation and Greenberg) were similar in duration in the groups of study and control. The neonates of the obese parturient didn't have significant values related to the index of vitality, sex, weight and evolution in the nursery, when compared to similar values in neonates of non obese parturient. Conclusions: Despite the pathologies mentioned in obese parturient and their neonates, such facts weren't statistically significant, when compared to a group of non obese parturient.
