Abstract

ABSTRACT Purpose: to study main causes of maternal mortality occurring in the CHS, important tertiary center hospital. Methods: in a descriptive retrospective observational study from medical female's handbooks, of 10 to 49 years old, attended in the CHS from January/2000 to December/2006. Maternal variables studied: age, color, procedure city, civilian state, school conditions, prenatal care, parity, gestational age, and general state in hospital internment, types of deliveries, complications and causes of deaths. Fetus variables analyzed; vitality, weight, complications. Results: in the CHS occurred 21.386 deliveries, 18.753 newborns alive, identifying 33 maternal deaths, prevailing: 20 - 39 years old (66,66%), 23 (29,29%) from neighbours cities, rearguard assistance in 24 patients (72,72%), 18 (54,54%) with white color, 14 (42,43%) married, 22 (66,66%) multiparous, 17 (51,51%) with prenatal care, gestational age 20 - 35 weeks (57,57%), 24 (72,72%) in bad general survival conditions, 14 (56,25%) mortality from direct causes and 18 (43,75%) indirect, RMM = 175,97. Conclusion: the health programs applied to woman, just now, are in deficit deserving functional and co-ordination revisions. The deaths have difficult solution, high complexity, and the solutions is necessary to avoid damages of the family. Support PIBIC-CEPE.
