ABSTRACT Introduction: benzodiazepines are psychotropic drugs of restricted prescription used for crisis of anxiety, insomnia and convulsions. Its use is usually inadequate. Objectives: to access the profile of the benzodiazepine user and its reason. Methods: all patients older than 18 years were interviewed in a Primary Care Unit in Sorocaba, during the year of 2008. Results: benzodiazepines were used by 13,79% of the population. There was no significant difference of use between men and women due to the small population of men in the survey; however, it was noteworthy that the drug is used mainly by older women who studied less, with no significant influence of monthly income or relationship status. The main reasons of prescription were anxiety and insomnia, with high duration of treatment (over 36 months), mainly by not specialized physicians. Conclusion: the authors believe this occurs due to the characteristics of the primary care in a suburban neighborhood. Support: CEPE.Downloads
