Abstract

Refeeding syndrome is an increasing and extremely important clinical problem, unfortunately diagnosed late (probably because it is poorly recognized or understood). Several studies have tried to evaluate the incidence of refeeding syndrome, but with quite different results. Pathophysiological processes include glucose and fluid balance disorders and electrolyte disturbances involving mainly the intracellular ions phosphate, potassium and magnesium. Although potentially avoidable, it is associated with high morbidity and mortality. Multiprofessional teams can help provide counseling and education in its prevention, recognition and treatment. Treatment guidelines should be established to facilitate it.
