ABSTRACT Purpose: the objective of this study is to define the average level of total serum cholesterol in newborns, so as to allow following-up the lipidic profile from this population since its birth. Methods: the study was based on the collection of umbilical cord blood of newborn infants to measure total serum cholesterol and establishment of its mean value, along with a literature review. Blood samples were also obtained from their mothers in order to evaluate whether it influenced their newborns' levels of cholesterol. Results: In this study we determined the serum total cholesterol in the blood of umbilical cords of newborns C.H.S as 30.07 mg/dl (standard deviation 27.93). Such values express a variability that surpasses the limits expected for a common population, that is, not following a Gaussian distribution. Conclusion: observational studies have shown the close relationship between diet and the occurrence of cardiovascular diseases. Based on this correlation, determining the average value of serum cholesterol may be useful to characterize this as a possible risk factor, if elevated since the childhood. Therefore, knowing the lipid profile of newborns is very useful, as it may broaden the comprehension of dilispidemia, its associations to atherosclerosis and other cardiovascular diseases. From this data on, we promote an earlier and more efficacious prevention.Downloads
