Abstract

ABSTRACT Objectives: to test the applicability of different protocols for identifying functional disability in adults, to estimate its prevalence, and to describe its profile. Methods: this is a cross-sectional observational study conducted among the population attended by the Family Health Program (FHP) in Sorocaba, Vila Sabiá. Validated protocols were applied for the identification of disability: International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (CIFIS), National Research by Household Sampling (PNAD), Health Assessment Questionnaire (HAQ); Health Survey (ISA). Results: the samplereached a total of 70 households (90.9%), with 178 individuals over 18 years. 74.7% of respondents had HAQ normal and 25.3% altered (nonzero). Among the seven questions in the PNAD, the most relevant was case to run, lift weights, and do sports or performing heavy work, for which 24.3% referred any degree of difficulty. The ISA revealed 8.4% of individuals with difficulty for seeing, 3.4% were blind of one eye, 0.6% was blind of both eyes, and 5.6% referred hearing difficulties, 1.1% was deaf of one ear, 1.7% had paralysis. The CIFIS was applied in 45 individuals with nonzero HAQ, by using four components: Body Function, for which 44.4% of individuals presented disability in joints and bones; Body Structure, for which 73.3% had limitations related to movement; Activities and Participation, for which 28.9% were unable to transport, to move and handle objects and 26.7% for walk and move; and Environmental Factors related to disability, for which 42.2% pointed lack of support and relationships. Conclusion: the protocol HAQ was the most appropriate and enforceable protocol to be used by the Community Health Workers of the PSF. Results confirmed a significant prevalence of disability with a predominant profile of physical disability.
