Objective: to investigate the association of sexual maturation with body weight excess in Brazilian adolescent students aged 12 to 17 years participating in the Study of Cardiovascular Risk in Adolescents (ERICA). Methods: This is a cross-sectional study, using the database of the ERICA Study carried out in 2013 and 2014. To compare the quantitative variables between groups, the Kruskal-Wallis test was used. Associations between qualitative variables were assessed using Pearson's chi-square test. Univariate and multivariate stepwise forward logistic regression was performed for the association between excess weight and Tanner staging. Results: Precocious pubertal stage was identified in 45.4% of the girls and in 46.3% of the boys, while the prevalence of overweight was 23.8% (95%CI 23.4-24.2) and 25.2% (95%CI 24.7-25.7) in girls and boys, respectively. Girls in the early pubertal stage were 1.32 times more likely to be overweight (95%CI 1.19-1.59) and boys in the early puberal stage were 1.32 times more likely to be overweight (95%CI 1.18-1.50). Conclusion: Brazilian adolescents between 12 and 17 years of age, of both genders, who presented early sexual maturation are more likely to be overweight, which corroborates the findings of other studies, showing the importance of considering sexual maturation when assessing nutritional status.
