Abstract

ABSTRACT The importance of gastroesophageal reflux disease can be emphasized, due to its high prevalence in the occidental population, representing 75% of the esophageal diseases. The natural history of this disease determines functional and structural alterations to the esophagus that can be irreversible, implicating on a health related quality of life worsening and even on esophageal adenocarcinoma. The surgical procedure is only one of the ways that can be used and its indication must obey well defined criteria as well as be adapted to the evolutional phase of the disease. The introduction of the laparoscopic surgery determined an expressive rising to the surgical treatment of this disease, and the results depend also of technical details.
