Abstract

This article discusses the relevance of photography for understanding society and the social hierarchy of Rio Grande do Sul in the 1920s, within the context of the civil war in the state, especially highlighting the 3rd Division of the Liberation Army, under the command of Estácio Azambuja. It also includes a brief overview of war photography in the Center-South of Brazil, starting with the Paraguayan War, the Federalist Revolution of 1893 and the Contestado War, relating these to the photographs used as primary sources for this research, located in the collection of the Historical and Geographical Institute of Rio Grande do Sul. In short, we conclude that the production and dissemination of images of the leaders of the 1923 Revolution played a decisive role in the dissemination of opposition political ideals and in the construction of the public image of the revolutionary leaders and their subsequent insertion in the memory and historiography of the state.

Giovanna Tirelli Lopes Timm, Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul

Bachelor's degree in History from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul. She volunteered at DELFOS/Space for Documentation and Cultural Memory at PUCRS and was an intern at the Historical and Geographical Institute of Rio Grande do Sul in the second semester of 2023, conducting research in primary sources on the history of integralism and republicanism in Brazil. PUCRS Scientific Initiation Scholarship (2023 - 2024) with the project "The backlands landscape in travel reports: between description and experience (1922 - 1945)", under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Luciana Murari. CNPq Scientific Initiation Scholarship from PUCRS (2024 - present) with the project "A new visuality for the nation in the documentary photography of Marcos Santilli (Brazil, 1970 - 1990)", under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Charles Monteiro. Member of the Research Center for Image and Visual Culture at PUCRS, and is interested in Latin American Cultural History and Indigenous History.
