Ameridian culture and nature in the visual poetics of Sergio Medeiros

Abstract

The aim of this article is reflect on the visual poetics of Sérgio Medeiros, a poet from Mato Grosso do Sul, who currently lives in the state of Santa Catarina, where he also works as a university professor. Medeiros' visual poems establish a vigorous dialogue with Amerindian culture under different aspects, but with a special focus on the issue of animism. His visual poems or calligrams present strong colors, images of elements of nature and, little by little, they have been moving away from verbal references, which makes certain poems seem more like works of plastic arts, thus breaking the boundaries of traditional experimental poetry. The poems presented in this article will be read, preferably, in the light of the notions of the perspectivism defended by anthropologist Eduardo Viveiros de Castro.
