A transnational look at Olga Benario Prestes: A communist in the Gestapo archives, by Anita Leocádia Prestes

This article contrasts Olga Benario Prestes: A Communist in the Gestapo Archives (2017) by Anita Leocádia Prestes, and its translation into German, Olga Benario Prestes: eine biografische Annäherung (2022) [Olga Benario Prestes: A Biographical Approach]. Despite the noticeable link between original and translated texts, they diverge in literary genre, author’s position and national belonging of Olga's figure. This study highlights interpretative shifts that occur within these categories from "biographical narrative" (Prestes, 2017) to "biographical approach" (Prestes, 2022), and from the perspective of a historian to that of a secondary witness, as well as regarding Olga Benario's representation as a Brazilian and German female political icon. As such, translation is understood as mediation practice and system feedback; a trans(con)textual analysis with an examination of paratexts (Genette, 2009) of the Brazilian and German editions in drawn on.
