Para Charles S. Peirce (1839-1914), fundador del pragmatismo filosófico y de la semiótica moderna, no hay antagonismo entre el discurso literario y el científico. Tanto los textos literarios como los científicos son signos que proponen argumentos mediante símbolos, índices e iconos. Del mismo modo, los argumentos científicos y literarios ejercen una agencia semiótica autónoma y crean realidades propias. El artículo presenta a Peirce como científico, así como lector y crítico de la literatura universal, y ofrece un esbozo de su trivium semiótico de gramática especulativa, lógica crítica y retórica especulativa y su aplicabilidad al estudio del discurso literario.
