MEIO MATERIAL: UM PARADIGMA MECANICISTA

A visão de um mundo funcionando como uma máquina com alavancas e engrenagens, conhecido como paradigma mecanicista, pressupõe a necessidade de um meio material para que as forças e os movimentos sejam executados e transmitidos. Por conta disso, diversas teorias passaram a sugerir a existência de materiais, como por exemplo o Flogisto, o Calórico e o Éter. Este trabalho teve como objetivo compreender por que as teorias necessitavam da introdução de meios materiais para se tornarem inteligíveis e até que ponto a insistência em certa visão de mundo é benéfica. Para isso, foi realizado um balanço histórico, com base nas ideias do filósofo da ciência Thomas Kuhn, discutindo algumas teorias mecanicistas até a ruptura deste paradigma.

Abstract

The vision of a world functioning as a machine with levers and gears, known as a mechanistic paradigm, presupposes the need for a material means, so that forces and movements are executed and transmitted.  Because of this, several theories started to suggest the existence of materials, such as Phlogiston, Caloric and Ether.  This work aimed to understand why the theories needed the introduction of material means to become intelligible and to what extent the insistence on a certain worldview is beneficial.  For this, a historical balance was made, based on the ideas of the philosopher of science Thomas Kuhn, discussing some mechanistic theories until the rupture of this paradigm.
