São elas: Isabella Cortese (século XVI), Marie Meurdrac (1610-1680), Claudine Picardet (1735-1820), Marie-Anne Pierrette Paulze Lavoisier (1758-1836), Jane Haldimand Marcet (1769-1858), Almira Hart Lincoln Phelps (1793-1884), Arabella Burton Buckley (1840-1929) e Lucy Jane Rider Meyer (1849-1922).

Abstract

This article seeks to recover, value and disseminate the contributions of some women to the popularization and teaching of Chemistry up to the mid-twentieth century. It constitutes a qualitative bibliographic study grounded in the contemporary approach to the History of Science, through which eight women were identified as having made significant contributions to the dissemination of scientific knowledge in Europe and the United States, a scope defined by the delimitation of the documentary corpus investigated, the availability of documentation, and the possibilities for analyzing the selected women’s trajectories and works. These women are: Isabella Cortese (16th century); Marie Meurdrac (1610–1680); Claudine Picardet (1735–1820); Marie-Anne Pierrette Paulze Lavoisier (1758–1836); Jane Haldimand Marcet (1769–1858); Almira Hart Lincoln Phelps (1793–1884); Arabella Burton Buckley (1840–1929); and Lucy Jane Rider Meyer (1849–1922). The study examines aspects of these women’s personal and professional trajectories, with emphasis on their works aimed at the popularization of science, particularly among women and non-specialist audiences. In addition, it was necessary to understand the historical and social contexts in which these women acted, considering aspects of women’s participation in and (de)valuation within science, while seeking to discuss their contributions to the circulation of scientific knowledge.
