Abstract

This paper presents an excerpt from “The Fundamental Ideas of Mathematics” (1929), a popular science book produced by the Brazilian mathematician, engineer and astronomer Manuel Amoroso Costa (1885-1928). The focus is on the concepts of order and continuity, themes presented by Amoroso Costa in chapter IX, in light of set theory. A comparative examination of this text and his manuscripts shows the predominant influence of mathematician Edward V. Huntington (1874-1952), although there is evidence of contributions made by other authors. The importance of historical studies focused on the analysis of scientists' manuscripts is highlighted here, as the manuscripts bear witness to the struggle experienced by the authors while writing (and reflecting) on the themes they intend to disseminate.
