Resumo
Este trabalho propõe uma análise abrangente da vida e das contribuições científicas de Ellen Swallow Richards (1842-1911), destacando seu papel pioneiro como educadora enquanto primeira instrutora mulher do Instituto de Tecnologia de Massachusetts. Ellen foi uma cientista renomada nos campos da química e da engenharia sanitária, além de uma incansável defensora da educação científica e do ensino prático. Além de investigar suas realizações como pesquisadora, nas áreas de análise química, ecologia e nutrição, exploraremos o seu papel como educadora, bem como a sua influência no campo da educação científica. Discutiremos como sua metodologia se baseava na importância de ensinar ciência de forma prática, promovendo o aprendizado por meio da experimentação e da aplicação dos conceitos científicos à vida cotidiana. Suas metodologias de ensino chamam a atenção por serem direcionadas às suas aprendizes do sexo feminino, muitas delas donas de casa e professoras de química da educação básica, as quais residiam fora de Boston e até mesmo fora dos Estados Unidos da América. Seu compromisso com o ensino acessível e inclusivo foram fundamentais para a promoção da educação científica entre as mulheres e em comunidades menos favorecidas. Temos como objetivo fornecer uma visão aprofundada de sua vida e legado, destacando suas contribuições significativas para as ciências da natureza e para o ensino de mulheres, os quais servem de inspiração até os dias atuais.

Abstract
This paper proposes an embracing analysis of the life and scientific contributions of Ellen Swallow Richards (1842-1911), highlighting her pioneering role as an educator as the first female instructor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Ellen was a renowned scientist in the fields of chemistry and sanitary engineering, as well as a tireless advocate of science education and practical teaching. In addition to investigating her achievement as a researcher, in the areas of chemical analysis, ecology and nutrition, we will explore her role as an educator, as well as her influence in the field of science education. We will discuss how her methodology was based on the importance of teaching science in a practical way, promoting learning through experimentation and the application of scientific knowledge to everyday life. Her teaching methodologies are noteworthy for being directed to her female learners, many of them housewives and chemistry teachers in basic education, who resided outside Boston and even outside the United States of America. Her commitment to accessible and inclusive education was instrumental in advancing science education among women and in disadvantaged communities. We aim to provide an in-depth look at her life and legacy, highlighting her contributions to the natural sciences and to women's education, which serve as an inspiration to this day.
