The synagogue of women
A feminist and critical historical analyze of Apostle Acts 16,11-15.40

We realize a critical historical exegetical exercise on the text of Apostle Acts 16,11-15.40. The object has been selected because its semantic specifities are clues to enter the world of the text, the protagonism of Lydia in the Pauline mission and the interpretative history usually eurocentric and patriarchal. We do observe the global structure of the book, its literary gender, its origin and goal, and we define this pericope of the ‘we-fragment’ as a literary gender of mission and ecclesial enpowerment. Its literary characteristic justifies the use of hapaxlegomena coming from the social and historical context to wich the the final compilation of Apostle Acts keeps itself faithful. Heuristic work and feminist hermeneutic enables to reconstruct a part of the history of the beginnings of the church in Macedonia starting from the Pauline mission in the synagogue of women in Phillipi. Lydia’s leadership together with the group of women manufacturing textile products and living the jewish Faith remains in the church gathered in her house, even after her theological statement and the baptizing of the group of her house. We try to understand the particularities of the text in its literary, historic, social, cultural, geopolitical and economical context, its theological meaning in context of the Apostles Act and its relevance to strength the struggle of women and men today. The article may enlarge epistemological, methodological and theological perspectives on the basis of a critical and liberating textual analyse.
