Abstract

The young Dutch Jewish woman Etty (Esther) Hillesum died at the age of 29 in Auschwitz and left behind only three diaries and a few letters. However, her voice echoes ever more strongly as one of the great testimonies of the 20th century and has been studied in various fields of knowledge. In this text, we try to relate her mysticism to her literary experience, looking for her affinities with poets such as Rainer Maria Rilke. At the same time, we try to show how in this young writer, thinker and mystic, corporeality is inseparable from interiority and spiritual experience. Finally, we try to move towards the conclusion that Etty Hillesum’s writing belongs to the genre of the best testimonial literature of our time, thus opening up important avenues for thinking, understanding and transforming the future of humanity.
