Uma discussão sobre o papel das definições formais no ensino e aprendizagem de limites e continuidade em Cálculo I

Abstract

Este artigo apresenta uma discussão sobre o papel das definições formais de limites e continuidade nos processos de ensino e aprendizagem de Cálculo I. Inicialmente, buscamos algumas contribuições de pesquisas na área de Educação Matemática no Ensino Superior. A seguir, descrevemos uma pesquisa realizada com alunos dos cursos de Licenciatura em Matemática e Bacharelado em Estatística de uma universidade pública, a partir da elaboração e aplicação de atividades envolvendo definições formais de limites e continuidade, analisadas à luz das relações entre intuição e rigor. Os resultados apontam para a necessidade de se repensar o papel das definições formais de limites e continuidade na perspectiva de um ensino que privilegie a construção de imagens e definições conceituais significativas para a aprendizagem. Abstract This article presents a discussion on the role of formal definitions of limits and continuity in the teaching and learning of Calculus I. Initially, we seek some contributions of research in Mathematics Education in higher education. We describe a survey apllied to students of Bachelor Degree in Mathematics and Statistics in a public university from the development and implementation of activities involving formal definitions of limits and continuity, considered in light of the relationship between intuition and rigor. The results point to the need to rethink the role of formal definitions of limits and continuity from the perspective of a teaching that promotes the construction of conceptual images and conceptual definitions significant for learning.
