About the Journal
Brief Background
Bakhtiniana. Revista de Estudos do Discurso [Bakhtiniana. Journal of Discourse Studies], in electronic format, is a bilingual journal with all its content published in Portuguese and English. It was created in 2008 by Programa de Estudos Pós-Graduados em Linguística Aplicada e Estudos da Linguagem [Applied Linguistics and Language Studies Graduate Program] from the Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo/LAEL-PUCSP and by the members of Linguagem, Identidade e Memória [Language, Identity and Memory] Research Group/CNPq (National Council for Scientific and Technological Development). The journal aims to promote and to publicize research on discourse.
Since 2019, it has published an issue every three months. Each issue is composed of original papers and book reviews written by professors and researchers from international and national universities.
It receives submissions on a continuous flow basis and for themed issues.
In 2023, the journal has adopted continuous publication, a format where its texts including presentations, editorials, articles, and reviews are published simultaneously on SciELO as they are approved and revised. These texts are distributed across the four annual issues of the periodical, remaining open until the end of its periodicity. After an issue is complete, it is also made available on Portal de Revistas da PUC-SP. The option for this type of publication is in line with Bakhtiniana's commitment in accelerating the communication process of quality research and, therefore, contributing to its availability for reading and citation.
In compliance with the current and good national and international scientific communication practices, Bakhtiniana has started in 2020 its process of adherence to Open Science.
Open Science Compliance
Bakhtiniana. Revista de Estudos do Discurso follows the Gold Open Access model.
Open Science is a new way of formatting, projecting, managing, communicating and evaluating research and its dissemination, focusing on the transparency of processes and the availability of the elements that ground their divulging, such as methods, data and computer programs.
Bakhtiniana’s adherence to Open Science comprises:
1) Preprints as an authors’ option for the formal beginning of their research communication.
Preprints are scientific texts ready for submission to a journal which are deposited by their authors in a public server prior too or during their submission to a specific journal.
Pre-publishing provides the speeding of research results dissemination, enables authors to receive comments from readers on their studies and to carry out changes deemed pertinent.
Authors who opt for preprints and further or simultaneous submission to Bakhtiniana must: a) have their manuscripts exclusively deposited at the SciELO Preprints server; and b) inform that the manuscript is deposited at the SciELO Preprints server, as well as provide their name and URL at the “Open Science Compliance Form” (a document to the filled out and attached as supplementary file during submission. SUBMISSION WITHOUT THIS DOCUMENT CANNOT BE REVIEWED).
Bakhtiniana only accepts the submission of unpublished articles, whether print or electronic, except for those made available at the SciELO Preprints server, and the simultaneous submission to other journals, for evaluation purposes, is not accepted.
2) Transparent management of research data and availability of computer program codes and other material underlying articles.
Bakhtiniana encourages authors to make available all the content underlying their manuscript (data, computer program codes and other material) prior to or during publication. Exceptions are allowed in case of legal or ethical issues. The objective is to facilitate the manuscript evaluation and, if it is accepted, to contribute to the preservation and reuse of contents and research.
Information on the availability (or not) of contents underlying submitted papers must be informed at the “Open Science Compliance Form” (a document to the filled out and attached as supplementary file during submission. SUBMISSION WITHOUT THIS DOCUMENT CANNOT BE REVIEWED).
3) Options for open peer review based on acceptance by authors and/or reviewers.
Authors must opt between one or more means to opening the journal peer review process. Options are: a) the publication or not of the manuscript acceptance evaluation reviews, in case the submitted paper is accepted for publication; and b) the direct interaction or not with reviewers responsible for the manuscript evaluation.
Authors’ options must be informed at the “Open Science Compliance Form” (a document to the filled out and attached as supplementary file during submission. SUBMISSION WITHOUT THIS DOCUMENT CANNOT BE REVIEWED).
Reviewers may also opt between one or more means to opening the journal peer review process. Options are: a) the publication or not of the manuscript acceptance evaluation reviews, in case the submitted manuscript is accepted for publication; and b) the direct interaction or not with the authors of the paper under evaluation.
Reviewers must inform their options upon receiving a certain paper’s evaluation request.
Ethics in Publication
Publishing Ethics and Publishing Malpractice Statement
This journal is committed to ethics and quality in publication. We support standards of expected ethical behavior for all parties involved in publishing in our journal: the author, the journal editor, the peer reviewer and the editorial team. We do not accept plagiarism or other unethical behavior.
Duties of Editors:
Publication decision: Executive editors are responsible for deciding which submitted articles should be published, guided by the reviews provided by reviewers, the policies set by the Editorial Board, and the Responsible Editor of the journal. These policies must comply with current legal requirements regarding defamation, copyright infringement, and plagiarism. The editor may consult with the journal’s Editorial Board or Executive Editors in decision making.
Fair play: The editor should evaluate manuscripts for their intellectual content without regard to race, gender, sexual orientation, religious belief, ethnic origin, citizenship, or political philosophy of the authors.
Confidentiality: The editor and any editorial staff must not disclose any information about a submitted manuscript to anyone other than the corresponding author, reviewers, potential reviewers, other editorial advisers, and the publisher, as appropriate.
Disclosure and Conflicts of Interest: The editor must not use unpublished information in his/her own research without the express written consent of the author. The editor should recuse him/herself from considering manuscripts in which he/she has conflicts of interest resulting from competitive, collaborative, or other relationships or connections with any of the authors, companies, or (possibly) institutions connected to the papers.
Involvement and Cooperation in Investigations: The editor should take reasonable responsive measures when ethical complaints have been presented concerning a submitted manuscript or published paper.
Duties of Reviewers:
Contribution to Editorial Decision: Peer review assists the editor in making editorial decisions and through the editorial communications with the author may also assist the author in improving the paper.
Promptness: Any selected reviewer who feels unqualified to review the research reported in a manuscript or knows that its prompt review will be impossible should notify the editor and excuse himself/herself from the review process.
Confidentiality: Any manuscripts received for review must be treated as confidential documents. They must not be shown to or discussed with others.
Standards of Objectivity: Reviews should be conducted objectively and reviewers should express their views clearly with supporting arguments.
Acknowledgement of Source: Peer reviewers should identify relevant published work that has not been cited by the authors. The peer reviewer should also call to the editor's attention any substantial similarity or overlap between the manuscript under consideration and any other published paper of which they have personal knowledge.
Disclosure and Conflicts of Interest: Privileged information or ideas obtained through peer review must be kept confidential and not used for personal advantage. Reviewers should not consider manuscripts in which they have conflicts of interest resulting from competitive, collaborative, or other relationships or connections with any of the authors, companies, or institutions connected to the papers.
Duties of Authors:
Reporting Standards: Authors of reports of original research should present an accurate account of the work performed as well as an objective discussion of its significance. Underlying data should be represented accurately in the paper. A paper should contain sufficient detail and references to permit others to replicate the work. Fraudulent or knowingly inaccurate statements constitute unethical behavior and are unacceptable.
Originality and Plagiarism: The authors should ensure that they have written entirely original works, and if the authors have used the work and/or words of others that this has been appropriately cited or quoted. Plagiarism in all its forms constitutes unethical publishing behavior and is unacceptable.
Multiple, Redundant or Concurrent Publication: An author should not in general publish manuscripts describing essentially the same research in more than one journal or primary publication. Submitting the same manuscript to more than one journal concurrently and/or publish the same article in diferente journals constitute unethical publishing behavior and is unacceptable.
Acknowledgement of Sources: Proper acknowledgment of the work of others must always be given. Authors should cite publications that have been influential in determining the nature of the reported work. Information obtained privately, as in conversation, correspondence, or discussion with third parties, must not be used or reported without explicit, written permission from the source. Information obtained in the course of confidential services, such as refereeing manuscripts or grant applications, must not be used without the explicit written permission of the author of the work involved in these services.
Authorship of the Paper: Authorship should be limited to those who have made a significant contribution to the conception, design, execution, or interpretation of the reported study. All those who have made significant contributions should be listed as co-authors. Where there are others who have participated in certain substantive aspects of the research project, they should be acknowledged or listed as contributors. The corresponding author should ensure that all appropriate co-authors and no inappropriate co-authors are included on the paper, and that all co-authors have seen and approved the final version of the paper and have agreed to its submission for publication.
Disclosure and Conflicts of Interest: All authors should disclose in their manuscript any financial or other substantive conflict of interest that might be construed to influence the results or interpretation of their manuscript. All sources of financial support for the project should be disclosed.
Fundamental Errors in Published Works: When an author discovers a significant error or inaccuracy in his/her own published work, it is the author’s obligation to promptly notify the journal editor or publisher and cooperate with the editor to retract or correct the paper.
Duties of the Editorial Team
We are committed to ensuring that advertising, reprint or other commercial revenue has no impact or influence on editorial decisions.
Our articles are peer reviewed to ensure the quality of scientific publishing.

If the judgments of the two reviewers are inconsistent, a third reviewer should be called in. Once the review process is concluded, the review copies are sent to the author, or to the first author of co-authored papers, with appropriate instructions. The journal editor reserves the right to return a manuscript if it does not follow the style requirements available at http://revistas.pucsp.br/index.php/bakhtiniana. Authors are responsible for the data and concepts worked out in the paper as well as for the correctness of references and bibliography.
Blinded Peer-Review is followed for all manuscripts submitted to Bakhtiniana, including preprints.
We only adopt an Open Peer-Review system when authors and reviewers explicitly declare to agree to interact directly with one another. Authors must make their option clear in the “Open Science Compliance Form.” (SUBMISSION WITHOUT THIS DOCUMENT CANNOT BE REVIEWED). Bakhtiniana. Revista de Estudos do Discurso, committed to the integrity of literature, publishes Errata, Expressions of Concern, or Retraction Notices depending on the situation and in accordance with
Guidelines on Best Practices for Strengthening Ethics in Scientific Publication
Policy on Conflict of Interest
Conflicts of interest may arise when authors, reviewers, or editors have interests that could influence the preparation or evaluation of manuscripts. Conflict of interest can be of a personal, commercial, political, academic, or financial nature. Taking this into consideration and in accordance with COPE,
Editor: must not use unpublished information in his/her own research without the express written consent of the author. The editor should recuse him/herself from considering manuscripts in which he/she has conflicts of interest resulting from competitive, collaborative, or other relationships or connections with any of the authors, companies, or (possibly) institutions connected to the papers.
Reviewers: privileged information or ideas obtained through peer review must be kept confidential and not used for personal advantage. Reviewers should not consider manuscripts in which they have conflicts of interest resulting from competitive, collaborative, or other relationships or connections with any of the authors, companies, or institutions connected to the papers.
Author(s): All authors should disclose in their manuscript any financial or other substantive conflict of interest that might be construed to influence the results or interpretation of their manuscript. All sources of financial support for the project should be disclosed.
If there is, even potentially, a conflict of interest, authors should disclose it on the last page of the manuscript submitted.
Adoption of Similarity Software
Bakhtiniana. Revista de Estudos do Discurso uses software available online to check the similarity of content/plagiarism policy (especially Turnitin), with prior and subsequent technical evaluation by the editorial team. Self-citations must not exceed 15% of the total references used to prevent self-referral from being considered self-plagiarism.
In addition, the journal counts on the collaboration of reviewers, who, at the time of the double blind evaluation, notify the editorial team of any substantial similarity between the manuscript in question and articles already published or simultaneously submitted to other journals, as well as other information considered relevant.
Articles resulting from theses and dissertations must make this information explicit, in order to avoid self-plagiarism. Texts cannot be coincident, totally or partially.
Adoption of Software Utilizing Artificial Intelligence Resources
Artificial intelligence does not meet the requirements of Bakhtiniana. Revista de Estudos do Discurso for authoring scientific articles, due to the need for accountability. Artificial intelligence (AI) tools and Language Models (LM) cannot be credited as authors in any academic work published by Bakhtiniana. Revista de Estudos do Discurso.
Texts generated by AI may contain biases, distortions, irrelevant information, misrepresentations, and plagiarism, many of which result from the algorithms used in their generation and largely depend on the content of the materials used to train them.
Artificial intelligence may be employed by authors in situations that do not involve ethical issues, such as accountability for the content of the article, declaration of conflicts of interest, and management of licensing agreements and copyrights.
The following activities will be considered valid for the use of artificial intelligence:
1- Language assistance for the article: When AI is employed to paraphrase or enhance the original content of the author, rather than suggesting new content, its function resembles that of spell checkers, dictionaries, and thesauri. Texts translated by artificial intelligence will not be accepted.
2- Literature search: Generative text models can be used as search assistants and to identify relevant literature. The usual requirements for citation accuracy and thoroughness of bibliographic reviews apply; attention must be paid to possible biases in the suggested citations. Authors are essential in the selection and critical analysis of the research conducted by AI.
Such uses must: a) be disclosed in the submitted article; and, b) the author(s) must remain responsible for the accuracy, integrity, and originality of their research articles, including any use of AI. Furthermore, the use of AI must not violate Bakhtiniana's plagiarism ethics policy. Manuscripts must be authored by the author and must not present ideas, data, words, or other materials from third parties without proper citation and transparent reference.
For more information, see: Guide to the Use of Artificial Intelligence Tools and Resources in Research Communication on SciELO
Gender and Sex Issues
All articles will be reviwed without considering distinctive social characteristics such as gender, sexual orientation, race, religious belief, nationality, or any other factors, as well as the political inclinations of the authors.
Articles submitted to Bakhtiniana. Revista de Estudos do Discurso must comply with the principles of the Guidelines on Sex and Gender Equity in Research (Sex and Gender Equity in Research - SAGER), which guide the reporting of information about sex and gender in study planning, analysis of data and results and interpretation of findings.
According to this guideline, the terms “sex” (biological attribute) and “gender” (shaped by social and cultural circumstances) should be used carefully to avoid any inaccuracy.
Additionally, Bakhtiniana. Revista de Estudos do Discurso adheres to a gender equity policy for forming its editorial board.
Ethics Committee
When the article or research article involves procedures with human beings, or sensitive data with the LGPD, authors must attach a statement of approval from the ethics committee of the institution responsible for approving the research.
