Verbal-Visuality and its Effects in Brazilian Sign Language (Libras) Interpreting at the Theater

Abstract

In this article, we examine the activity of simultaneous interpreting from Portuguese to Brazilian Sign Language (Libras) in the theatrical sphere, based on a dialogue between interpreting and theater studies, and theoretical formulations by Bakhtin and the Circle. Our objective is to investigate verbal-visual discourse and its sense effects on Libras interpreting by means of a qualitative analytical-descriptive study of two theater performances in which Sign Language Translators and Interpreters (SLTI) interpreted them so as to guarantee communication accessibility to deaf people. We investigated elements that influenced SLTI enunciations while interpreting in sign language, taking into account the texts that circulate in the theatrical sphere. These texts constitute a verbal-visual totality which creates an indissoluble whole directly influencing their forms of production, circulation, and reception.

Carolina Fernandes Rodrigues Fomin, PUCSP

Carolina Fomin é Mestranda em Linguística Aplicada e Estudos da Linguagem na PUC-SP, orientanda da Profa. Livre-Docente Elisabeth Brait, assinatura Beth Brait. Possui Bolsa Capes e faz parte do Grupo de Pesquisa Linguagem, Identidade e Memória - CNPQ. É coordenadora do curso de Pós-graduação em Tradução e Interpretação Libras-Português no Instituto Singularidades. É também Arquiteta Especialista em Acessibilidade e Tradutora Intérprete de Libras-Português (TILS). Possui Bacharel em Arquitetura e Urbanismo pela Universidade Presbiteriana Mackenzie (2001); Pós-Graduação e Especialização em Acessibilidade pela Universidade Nove de Julho (2013); Pós-Graduação e Especialização em Tradução e Interpretação em Libras - Português pelo Instituto Superior de Educação de São Paulo-Singularidades (2016) e certificação em Proficiência na Tradução e Interpretação da Libras - Língua Portuguesa pelo PROLIBRAS (2015). Atua como TILS em diversos espaços artísticos - culturais como: Museu de Arte Moderna de SP (MAM-SP), Instituto Itaú Cultural, Museu de Arte de São Paulo (MASP), SESC, Theatro NET São Paulo; e nestes atua como TILS tanto na mediação educativo-cultural de exposições, conferências e congressos, como em espetáculos teatrais e musicais voltados para o público adulto e infantil.
