This investigation intends to study the construction of the urban
environment of Gotham in the film Batman Begins (2005), by
Christopher Nolan, assessing how this fictional city is presented
through the medium of mise-en-scène. Through the theorethic
propositions established by Noël Carroll (1996), Edward Branigan
(1992) and David Bordwell (2006), among others, I intend to analyze
the resources that were employed in the filmic configuration of Gotham,
especially the concept of mise-en-scène as thought of by Bordwell and Thompson (2008), meaning the concatenation of setting,
characterization, lighting and acting. The filmic city, as I propose, can
be though of as more than a backdrop to dramatic action, effectively
becoming the igniting factor and conductor of the movie narrative.
