Reason for this Edition
Since the 1990s, the field of the Curriculum has been “infected” by post-critical theorizations,
reconfiguring the relationships between language and culture. During this shift, important
notions to the field (such as knowledge and power) have taken on new contours, perceived
within systems of reason that play a role in the constitution of the subjects of education. From
this perspective, it is educational discourses that consequently produce who we are and what we
can say and think about the curricula of basic education and teacher training. We do this from
the present, in a movement that articulates past experiences and projections of the future. This
means questioning the linearity of events, reorganizing how we have thought about the

relationship between past, present, and future in research in the field. In this edition, we wish to
bring together texts that focus on three thematic areas: (1) investigations from a historical
perspective that problematize current school and academic curricula by questioning causal
relationships and a linear, continuous chronology; (2) studies on policies that perceive curricula
as apparatuses that organize past experiences in an attempt to control our fears and the
unpredictability of the future; and (3) research interested in how the subjects of education are
constituted in relation to curricula, producing expectations of the future that include and, at the
same time, exclude possibilities of being and existing in the world. Around these three thematic
focuses, articles with research results and theoretical essays will be welcomed that, by
challenging the relationship between curriculum and discourse, can, in contemporary times,
contribute to reimagining the past and reinscribing the future.
