Problem solving as a methodological resource for teaching combinatory multiplication in the 6th grade of elementary school

This paper is the result of research carried out with students in the sixth year of elementary school at a public school in the municipality of Pedro Osório, RS. This aimed to analyze the contributions of the problem solving methodology for teaching combinatorial multiplication situations. The theoretical references used were the problem solving methodology of George Polya (1967) and the studies of Professor Lourdes de la Rosa Onuchic (1999). The methodology used was action research, which was developed in a total of five meetings with the class. The main instruments for data collection were initial protocol and final protocol, complemented by documental analysis, field diary, photographs and filming. The analysis procedures were the tabulation of two categories; analysis of protocols and analysis of troubleshooting steps. The results point to a significant performance in the final protocol, and it was found that the data showed a growth in learning strategies and math teaching skills after the intervention.
