Guidelines for Using AI
Guidelines for the Use of AI
As the journal of the International GeoGebra Institute of São Paulo (IGISP), the journal Educação Matemática Pesquisa (Mathematical Education Research) of the Graduate Program in Mathematics Education at the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo (PUC-SP), rated Qualis A1 by CAPES, adopts the following guidelines for the use of Artificial Intelligence (Generative AI) in the academic writing of manuscripts submitted to this journal for possible publication:
- Objective
To ensure the ethical, transparent, and responsible use of Artificial Intelligence (Generative AI) tools in the preparation of manuscripts, maintaining the integrity of authorship and academic quality. In addition to being aligned with other journals (such as Elsevier (https://www.elsevier.com/about/policies-and-standards/generative-ai-policies-for-journals?utm_source=chatgpt.com) and Taylor&Francis (https://taylorandfrancis.com/our-policies/ai-policy/?utm_source=chatgpt.com)), which also establish guidelines for the use of AI tools.
- Scope of Application
Applies to all authors submitting manuscripts to the journal, starting in August 2025, during the preparation and textual review process.
- Permitted Use (with human supervision)
- Improving the clarity, cohesion, and linguistic correctness of the text;
- Stylistic suggestions or textual restructuring;
- Assistance in the translation or first draft of the text or abstract (when not originally written in English);
- Generation of structure outlines, provided they are reviewed and validated by the authors.
- Prohibited Use
- Automatic production of fundamental content of the text, such as theoretical arguments, data analysis, or conclusions;
- Generation of unverified or artificially fabricated data or figures;
- Listing AI tools as author or co-author of the manuscript (as they cannot take responsibility for the content);
- Responsibility and Review
- Authors are entirely responsible for the accuracy, originality, and integrity of the manuscript, including parts generated or assisted by AI;
- They must check citations, ideas, factual statements, or references generated by AI and correct any errors, bias, or inconsistencies;
- Mandatory Declaration of AI Use
When submitting the manuscript, authors must include a formal statement stating:
- Name of the tool(s) used (and version),
- Section(s) of the text where the tool was used,
- Purpose and intent of use.
Example of AI Use Statement to Include in the Manuscript
AI Use Statement
During the preparation of this manuscript, we used the model ChatGPT (April 2024 version, OpenAI) exclusively to improve the style and grammar of the initial sections of the Introduction and Discussion. All content generated was reviewed and edited by the authors, who retain full responsibility for the final content. No conceptual or analytical sections were generated by AI.
7 Consequences of Misuse
- Submissions that contain undisclosed or inappropriate use of AI (e.g., without review or with fabricated content) may be rejected, revised, or investigated editorially;
- Policy for Reviewers
- Do not upload unpublished manuscripts or proposals (including files and images) to AI tools for analysis, summarization, or any other content purpose.
- Restricted use only to enhance the clarity and linguistic correctness of review comments.
- Any AI-generated excerpts must be reviewed and approved in their entirety by the reviewer.
- The reviewer retains full responsibility for the accuracy, integrity, and impartiality of their review, even when using AI for text refinement.
- Policy for Editors
- Do not submit unpublished manuscripts, associated files, images, or any confidential information to AI tools.
- Avoid risks of proprietary rights infringement and breaches of confidentiality arising from the use of AI on unpublished content.
