Affect, Emotions, Feelings, State of the artAbstract
The aim of this article is to present a state of the art review of the notion of affect by detailing its conceptual boundaries, and unraveling the terminological complications which involve the relationship between this idea and bordering categories such as emotion and feeling. Therefore, through a comprehensive bibliographic research, we have offered an overview of the maturation and development history of the notion of affect, from its most relevant elaborations in the fields of philosophy, sociology, psychology and neuroscience to its appropriation in the language studies terrain. Afterwards, we have discussed the different meanings and understandings attributed to affect in contemporary literature, which build a more intimate relationship with the field of study which delves into the impact of the affective experiences in language teaching and learning, privileging an embodied concept of affect. Finally, we have delimited borders and porous gaps among the categories of affect, emotions and feelings, highlighting the ramifications of adopting a perspective which reconciles body and mind in the study of the role of affectivity in the process of language teaching and learning, presenting perspectives for future research about affect.
