This article aimed to contribute to the ongoing discussion on the teaching of literature and, especially, of African-American literature. In order to do that, based on the Dialogical Discourse Analysis (DDA) as the means to analyze literary texts and to teach literature written in English, we tried to show the implications of this theoreticalmethodological stand, namely, (i) the study of literature from the literary text, which strives for social breadth, (ii) the study of the literary text in its original language, and (iii) the dialogue between verbal and extraverbal elements, which mobilizes a huge amount of material. Based on the analysis of the poem Still I rise by Maya Angelou, we were able to notice that not only did the analyst articulate the internal and external elements of the text in a constant dialogue, but she also embodied the theory, allowing her to do a spontaneous analysis of the poem.Downloads
