Edmund Gunter, matemático e clérigo, tornou-se professor de astronomia no Gresham College, instituição londrina que unia teoria e prática, criada por Thomas Gresham. Gunter desenvolveu instrumentos como o Setor e o Cross-staff, essenciais para navegação, e publicou tratados como Canon Triangvlorvm (1620), integrando logaritmos e trigonometria. Suas colaborações com Henry Briggs e William Oughtred promoveram aplicações práticas da matemática.
