Integration of Nursing Education in Polytechnic Higher Education: Historical Evolution

In Portugal, the integration of nursing education into the national educational system, at the level of polytechnic higher education, took place in 1988, with nursing schools being converted into higher nursing schools. Until 2001, nursing education was jointly supervised by the Ministries of Education and Health and from 2001 it began to be supervised only by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education. This integration required schools and teachers to adapt in the pedagogical, organizational and scientific dimensions, leading to the need to obtain academic degrees, as required by the Career Statute for Teaching Personnel in Polytechnic Higher Education.
Nursing education has developed, and continues, at an unusual pace, achieving quality standards through both national and international assessments. Currently it is developed in three cycles, bachelor's degree, master's degree and doctorate, with polytechnic education offering a bachelor's degree and master's degree and in university education, in partnership with Higher Schools of Nursing or Higher Education in Health, a doctorate is developed.
