In the 1960s, as in other European countries, Portugal saw the introduction of Modern Mathematics, considered by many to be a true ‘revolution in education.’ The main proponent of this change was the distinguished mathematician and educator José Sebastião e Silva.
In this paper, we present a study that analyses the trajectory of the Modern Mathematics Movement in secondary education in Portugal. The investigation has been carried out in the field of qualitative research, of a descriptive nature, based on the historical method. The methodology adopted focused on documentary analysis, through a critical and contextual reading of primary sources — curricular programmes, official documents and school textbooks from the period — and secondary sources, including scientific articles, historical texts on mathematics education in Portugal and articles published in major newspapers at the time.
The study allowed to conclude that, although the introduction of Modern Mathematics was considered a remarkable milestone at the time, the process was neither simple nor linear. It faced several criticisms and controversies, with some voices questioning its effectiveness and relevance to student learning. Nevertheless, this experience left positive contributions, such as the introduction of innovative methodologies, the enhancement of teaching materials and discovery learning, promoting a more active and reflective role on the part of students.
