Abstract

The text argues about the pedagogical possibilities of the Internet and the virtual learning environment in English teaching. The study was done in a higher education institution, involving eight English teachers. The data collection was done by questionnaires and by the teachers’ messages left in the forum section of the virtual learning environment during the teacher development course. The resources used and evaluated were: Podcast, Audacity, YouTube, Skypecast, Chat and Webquest. The Content Analysis Method (Bardin, 1977) was applied in analysis and interpretation of data that brought categories related to teacher development: object, interaction, communication, change, course, updating, Internet, change resistance and improvement. The results showed that the use of Internet and virtual learning environment can bring didactic and pedagogical positive advantages to English teaching if the teacher surpasses their technical use and the instrumental rationality and focuses the use of them to bring benefits for students’ learning.
