Abstract

This article analyzes a collection of theses and dissertations defended from 1999 to 2006 on the theme of Popular Education and Culture. Eight of them are within the art area, four deal with theater, two with music, one with ceramics, and another with photography; five deal with folklore (popular art, game playing, rituals, and festivities); two are connected to our historical heritage; one is on profound knowledge. The principal negative point is the difficulty in operating with the concepts as an analytical tool, and also that the methodology is not always made explicit. Another issue that is present is consciousness-raising. Although this has lost the illuminist slant of the intellectual who would open the way in the correct direction, the word is still resonant in several of the works analyzed. Finally, we observe a phenomenon of cultural hybridization that, according to Canclini, makes a bridge between popular and erudite culture.
