Although in recent years the teaching of probability has been implemented in many countries from primary education onwards and extends throughout all educational levels, research reports frequent errors when applying probability in everyday contexts or in professional decision making. In this paper we begin by analysing the probabilistic literacy, as the basis of probabilistic reasoning that every citizen should have. Next, we analyse the essential characteristics and components of probabilistic reasoning and describe some common biases in probabilistic reasoning. We conclude with some suggestions for developing students' probabilistic reasoning.
