Literacy: A Responsibility of All Areas of Study

Resumen

The aim of this article is to analyse part of a teaching unit theoretically underpinned in the PCN-LE (1998a), (National Curriculum Parameters – English Language, Elementary Education). This unit was elaborated by me for students of Cieja that are finishing basic education. I highlight the educational and socio-political role of English in the school curriculum and stress how the awareness of the importance of this role can enable the teacher to play a significant part in social transformation. Finally, I approach the importance of a foreign language, especifically the English language, in the curriculum of Brazilian schools, emphasizing its role in the student’ s literacy and education.

Adelaide Ferreira Margato is a former EFL teacher, pedagogical coordinator and principal in City Council and State-run schools in São Paulo, Brazil. She is currently working as a teacher on a project offered by Cultura Inglesa and PUC-SP to teachers of English from state schools. Her area of research is the on-going education of foreign language teachers.
