Abstract

The inclusion of the History of Mathematics in teaching enables a critical and contextualized approach to pedagogical practices. The analysis of historical sources and artifacts contributes to understanding the production and social appropriation of mathematical knowledge, as well as suggesting new didactic strategies. This study examines the science outreach magazine Le Petit Inventeur, published in 1925, which presents the ellipsograph as an instrument designed for constructing ellipses. Situated within the context of the intense circulation of knowledge in the interwar period, the publication highlights the role of technical objects as mediators between science and society, bringing abstract concepts closer to everyday reality. Drawing on updated historiography, the ellipsograph is interpreted not only as a technical apparatus but also as a cultural element, carrier of practices and knowledge linked to teaching. In addition to the historical analysis, the study discusses proposals for applying ellipsograph models in secondary education, exploring the definition, equation, and properties of the ellipse. Considering the longstanding challenges of teaching ellipses—particularly regarding visualization and applicability in basic education—it is argued that a critical analysis of historical instruments can contribute to renewing pedagogical practices. In this sense, material culture is valued as an educational resource capable of fostering curiosity, experimentation, and constructive learning. By articulating History of Science, Education, and the study of the ellipse, the research emphasizes the importance of historical sources in teacher training and in promoting a more interdisciplinary and meaningful approach to mathematics teaching.

Jeane Andréa dos Santos Araújo, Centro Federal de Educação Tecnológico de Minas Gerais

ossui Licenciatura em Matemática pela Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (1998), Especialização em Matemática pela Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (2001) e Mestrado pelo Programa de Mestrado Profissional em Matemática em Rede Nacional/Centro Federal de Educação Tecnológica de Minas Gerais. Atualmente, é professora de Matemática e mediadora central da Secretaria de Estado de Educação de Minas Gerais, além de pesquisadora do Grupo de Estudo e Pesquisa em História da Matemática do CEFET-MG. Atua na linha de pesquisa em História da Matemática, com ênfase em historiografia baseada em documentos populares franceses contemporâneos, cultura material e interfaces entre história e ensino da matemática. Possui experiência no ensino superior desde 2001, tendo lecionado disciplinas de Cálculo e Matemática em cursos das áreas de Biologia, Farmácia, Engenharia, Arquitetura e Matemática. É autora de livros paradidáticos de Geometria e desenvolve materiais didáticos voltados a abordagens inovadoras, lógica e metodologias ativas no ensino da matemática.

Holds a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics Teaching from the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG, 2003), a Specialization in Mathematics from the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG, 2005), a Master’s degree in Mathematics Education from the Federal University of Ouro Preto (UFOP, 2012), and a PhD in Mathematics Education from São Paulo State University – UNESP, Rio Claro (2020).

Currently, serves as a tenured Professor in the Department of Mathematics at the Federal Center for Technological Education of Minas Gerais (CEFET-MG) and as a Collaborating Professor in the Master’s Program in Mathematics Education at the Federal University of Ouro Preto (PPGEDMAT/UFOP), supervising master’s theses in the research line History, Culture, and Inclusion in Mathematics Education. Research interests include History of Mathematics, History of Mathematics Education, and Ethnomathematics.

Marcela, Centro Federal de Educação Tecnológica

Holds a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from the Jequitinhonha Valley Educational Foundation (2002), a Master’s degree in Mathematical and Computational Modeling from the Federal Center for Technological Education of Minas Gerais (2009), and a PhD in Mathematical and Computational Modeling from the Federal Center for Technological Education of Minas Gerais (2018). Currently, is an Associate Professor at the Federal Center for Technological Education of Minas Gerais. Has experience in Mathematics teaching at secondary and higher education levels and conducts research in Applied Mathematics, working mainly on the following topics: cellular automata, rough interface growth, and fracture propagation.
