Abstract

This dissertation analyzes how the Centro de Educação e Organização Popular (CEOP), guided by Educação Popular (EP)¹, worked in order to develop literacy and post-literacy programs designed to adolescents and adults from Favela São Remo, between 1989 and 2004. Favela São Remo is located in an area which belongs to University of São Paulo (USP), in Butantã, Southwest of São Paulo City. This dissertation discusses the history of CEOP through the observation of its relationship with the State, USP, the Associação de Moradores do Jardim São Remo, the Catholic Church located in this community and, with the Núcleo de Consciência Negra (NCN), located at USP. Therefore, it discusses the limits, possibilities and the concrete challenges faced by CEOP in order to reach its goals.
