Paulo Freire. Pedagogy of the Oppressed. Context.

Abstract

The Pedagogy of the Oppressed is a work of a thinker, brave, lucid and creative, a militant educator, aware of difficulties to face in the battle he sought to stop so that Education as an instrument of discrimination and domination, became an instrument of possible “conscientização”. It is a text that, from the outset, explicitly spells out the political options that structure it, by reflecting, on the first page, the dedication to "the ragged ones of the world." It was in an international political context and in the situation in which Freire himself was "being", that was taking place the gestation of the Pedagogy of the Oppressed. The time of writing was long preceded by a time of "speaking of the ideas to be fixed on paper." The great quality and the enormous social and educational effects that this work has triggered at the international level, really raise the interest in trying to uncover some of the conditions that allowed its production.
