Abstract

This paper reports a needs analysis process to English for Academic Purposes courses, applied to Computer Science graduate students. The analysis aimed at determining both present and target situations in the use of the language, initially with 13, and after some modifications in the instrument, with 213 students. Results show, among other things, that a big part of the students have a positive view of their English language proficiency, revealing a need of tasks and approaches that consider such an image, in order to ensure bigger motivation and better performance of the students in the tasks of the course.

Bruna Gabriela Augusto Marçal Vieira is an MA in Applied Linguistics at Universidade Estadual Paulista, UNESP, (2014). She has worked as an invited professor at Centro Universitário Católico Salesiano Auxilium – UNISALESIANO; and she has been developing research studies on teaching and learning of English for Academic Purposes.

Solange Aranha, Universidade Estadual Paulista “Júlio de Mesquita Filho”

Solange Aranha is a PhD in Linguistics and Portuguese at Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP), and an MA in Applied Linguistics at LAEL – PUC-SP. She is currently a Codtor Assistant Professor at UNESP – São José do Rio Preto, where she teaches and tutors both undergraduate and graduate students.
